also from california this summer, watching 'genius party' w/ tony, brady, and voln. i really really recommend genius party to anyone who hasn't seen it! although this drawing is pretty much entirely unrelated!

this had a whole whole whole lot of tiny pencil rendering from while i was hanging out at tony's work.. but keeping a sketchbook in your pocket and sitting on it all day is not a good way to keep pencil detail. :p

the writing on the top is me whining about not bringing my 35mm camera.. but i think in the end it's a lot better that i didn't because it would probably have been stolen along with my digital. ha.

you see, here:
1. stay up all night because you are doing crazy and beautiful summertime things
2. soon it is 4 a.m., a.k.a. birds chirp hour
3. the sun burns your eyes and you yell 'fuck you chirp chirp :[ '
4. you have sleepy and lovely thoughts of deergirl drawn with gold paintmarker
5. realize oh shit, it is the first day of summer classes, go to bookmaking class, bumble about like a zombie, talk about books.

then learn about the non-arbitrary proportion grid for book layouts.

later, learn that lavender oil melts printer toner and then you can stick letters to your tiny book.

'why don't i draw more?'

i think the question its self is getting in the way of drawing.

i went to art school so i'd draw more.
didn't really work. [and often i think maybe i should have majored in illustration!]

and i started tattooing so i would draw more.
also didn't really work.

having more responsibilities doesn't make it happen, having less responsibilities doesn't make it happen. traveling helps a lot, like a freaking lightning bolt of inspiration to the base of my consciousness. but that's fleeting.

what am i doing though? complaining? nay!

i want to know what keeps you going. what makes your art good and what makes it stay good. getting into a slump where drawing loses its fun from atrophy is dangerous.. pull me out of this funk!

a note on photography-

i used to think that good photography involved a lot of luck, being in the right place at the right time, finding beauty and capturing it.

at a point i realized that i no longer felt that way. it was like getting slapped with a cinderblock. i don't want to just make documents.

but at what point does appropriation begin and end? what kind of art ISN'T a means of processing existing objects and images?
